About Us

Dorothy Strachan

DorothyDorothy Strachan is a partner in Strachan-Tomlinson (ST), a process consulting firm based in Ottawa, Canada. She has been a professional facilitator since 1974. Her practice is in three main areas: process design and facilitation, organizational interventions such as strategic planning and team development and the creation of customized workshops and learning programs. She is the author of several publications in areas such as leadership development, facilitation, strategic planning, and effective coaching in high performance sport. Strachan-Tomlinson has a special interest in the health sector. Her latest books are "Making Questions Work, A Guide to What and How to Ask for Facilitators, Consultants, Managers, Coaches, and Eductors" and "Workshop Management: Method to Magic" (co-authored with Marian Pitters).

Prior to establishing her own firm, Dorothy was involved in education in the high school and community college systems as teacher and administrator. Her educational background includes undergraduate degrees in English and Psychology, an M.A. in English Literature and various certificates in adult education and organizational change.

Paul Tomlinson

PaulPaul Tomlinson is a partner in Strachan-Tomlinson (ST), a process consulting firm based in Ottawa, Canada. Paul's role in ST involves developing background papers, reports and guidelines to support ST facilitated initiatives (e.g., meetings, workshops, consultations, projects) that are focused on building agreement, coordinating action, fostering links and partnerships and developing consensus on complex issues. His approach includes open-ended questionnaires, interviews, surveys and the analysis and synthesis of background documents. Paul's orientation towards critical reflection and problem-centred action is an important facet of this work. He has written numerous reports, papers and workshop guides over the past 35 years.

Paul holds a doctorate in Adult Education from the University of Toronto and has Masters' Degrees in Educational Administration and Physical Education.

Dorothy and Paul are working on their next book on how to design productive and authentic processes which is expected in the spring of 2008.
